Why not enjoy a few hours taking in breathtaking scenery on route to the nearby lakes.  Once there, sit in the sunshine, have a gentle swim and then enjoy a bite to eat at the restaurants (not at Portillo).  Alternatively, recreational facilities are on offer for the more adventurous at some of the lakes below.   It is a good idea to have your Spanish phrase books/dictionaries with you, as English is not generally spoken here.

Nearby Lakes

Embalse de Portillo, Castril - canoeing takes place here.  However, you may do any other water sport that does not require a motor.

Embalse de Bolera - within 15 minutes drive of Castril (this is the second largest nature reserve in the region).  Activities on offer include swimming, fishing, or canoeing in the beautiful crystal clear blue water.  The recreation area is open during the summer season only (3rd week of June until 1st week of September).

Embalse San Clemente - within 15 minutes drive of Castril.  Again recreational facilities are available here.  The recreation area is open during the summer season only (3rd week of June until 1st week of September).

Embalse del Negratin - Zújar is within 25 minutes of Castril

Also well worth a visit is the Thermal Baths of Zújar

The Guadalentin River, "Arroyo de Guazalamanco" (a stream) is well worth a visit , the Botanical Gardens, excellent view points such as the one in "La Peña de Quesada", and an endless amount of places and routes ("Arroyo Frio", "Canaliega",...)

El Oliva, nr Castillejar, just is 20 minutes drive from Castril and provides you with a municipal swimming pool where you can laze by the pool and enjoy a meal and drinks in the bar. There are changing rooms and the showers which are very clean.  Opening dates are the third week of June until the first weekend in September.

There is also a Amphitheatre for outdoor concerts.

Huescar hosts a fresh water swimming pool with fish.  You are able to swim with the fish and feed them in the pool.
