You may wonder what the weather weather is like in rural Andalucía?

Here is our experience to date:-

The summers tend to be very hot and sunny most of the time with little or no rain.

During Summer 2005 we experienced the driest summer in many years with daily temperatures averaging 30 - 50C in the sun!  The heat here inland is very dry and you do not realise how hot it really is.  However, do not be deceived by the power of the sun's rays as although it may seem cooler you will burn quickly unless you cover up!

The winters are generally mild with a mixture of clear sunny days and overcast cool days.

September saw temperatures of 30 degrees plus and we remained in t-shirts day and night.

October saw the start of the rain and we experience several rainy days.  Temperatures remained in their 20's by day but the evenings began to get much cooler and the jumpers started to appear.

By November the temperatures averaged 12 - 15 degrees by day and remains very pleasant with plenty of sunshine.  Many of us remain in T-shirts by day.  However, it became bitterly cold when the sun went down around 6.30pm and you will need warm clothes.   The last week of November brought the first snow of winter.  Approximately 6" fell overnight, but by morning the sun was shining and it was beautiful to look at!

December brought very changeable weather with a mixture of sunny days and cloud.  We experienced less than a week of rain during this time but when the rain came, so did the blustery winds and it was bitterly cold.  The nights drew in and by 4pm most days it was getting very cold.  The sun went down around 6pm.

January 06 brought a lot more rain although when the sun came out it remained relatively warm.  Nights were dark by around 6.30pm.

In February we experienced a mixture of weather.  Weekdays were mainly dry with some sunshine and good temperatures of around 15 degrees but there were also a few days with snow.....sometimes only a covering, some days a few centimetres.   This soon disappeared when the sun came out and a quick thaw followed.  Nights were extremely cold.  By the end of February the nights were drawing out and the darkness came around 7pm.

TIP:

After a day out in the heat, it is good to return to a nice cool house.

To keep the house cool, you will need do as the Spanish do. DON'T let in the sunlight!

Please keep the shutters closed in your rooms.  Netting protects all the windows, so nothing, not even a fly should be able to enter the house!

At night, once the sun has gone down, and it begins to cool down a little, you can then throw wide all the shutters - even sleep with them open. It is perfectly safe!
